Bristol Myers Squibb plans to invest $2.3 billion in a new manufacturing campus in Houston, Texas. The company expects construction to be completed in 2030 and says the site will employ nearly 500 people.

The campus will support drug product and finished medicine manufacturing from late development through commercial launch. Bristol Myers said the facility will be able to handle small molecules, biologics and antibody drug conjugates.

The project is larger than the initial estimate

Earlier state filings described a possible $1 billion, 600,000-square-foot project in northeast Houston. Monday's announcement more than doubled the stated investment while confirming the location in the Generation Park area.

Bristol Myers described the design as modular and flexible, allowing production lines and digital systems to change as its portfolio develops. The company has not disclosed which medicines will be assigned to the site.

Manufacturing investment is moving toward the United States

The project is part of Bristol Myers' plan to spend $40 billion over five years on research, technology and manufacturing in the United States. Several large drugmakers have announced domestic plants as policymakers call for more local production of medicines and ingredients.

Houston has also attracted a planned Eli Lilly active pharmaceutical ingredient facility. Tax incentives, available land and access to technical workers have made the region a contender for large life sciences projects.

The long construction period carries execution risk

A 2030 completion date means the plant must be designed for a product mix that will change before operations begin. Demand for antibody drug conjugates is expanding, but specific programs can fail or move between internal and contract manufacturers.

The eventual value of the campus will depend on utilization, regulatory inspections and the products that reach commercial scale. The investment announcement does not guarantee that every planned production line will be built on the same schedule.
